Menjar rajoles?: our temporary installation at Miradors de l’horta Festival 2025
Until November 9, you can visit the temporary installation we have built together with Carpe and mha for the Miradors de l’horta 2025 festival in the municipality of Bonrepòs i Mirambell. As every year, it is held in the towns of the Mancomunitat del Carraixet (on this occasion, the participants are Bonrepòs i Mirambell, Vinalesa, Foios, and Alfara del Patriarca) with the aim of highlighting the agricultural landscape, sustainability, and local products, and encouraging visitors to develop a more conscious relationship with the orchards and redirect their gaze towards this natural and cultural heritage.
The slogan chosen by the organization for this year is “Nutrir l’horta” (Nurturing the orchard). Under this umbrella, in our proposal “Menjar rajoles?” (Want some rajoles?), we wanted to highlight what can happen to vacant orchards on the edge where the orchard meets the urban environment. With the disappearance of the Consell de l’horta (Garden Council), and therefore the lack of protection that this implies for many hectares by allowing construction in areas that until now were considered rural land, what can happen to a plot like the one in question and so many others?
Do we want our vegetable gardens to be places for producing fruit and vegetables, or vacant spaces for real estate development? Can we find value in vegetable gardens as natural and cultural spaces, or must they respond to other productive dynamics far removed from their nature?
In our proposal, we have used brick, a material typical of the region (until very recently, the Foios Brick Cooperative was in operation, the last of many that existed in the villages of l’horta, known as rajolars, of which only a few chimneys remain as vestiges of what once was) and at the same time a symbol of the urban pressure that threatens the orchards. With our proposal, we wanted to express the duality of a productive landscape in tension with the dynamics that cause its transformation and loss of value.
The brick, with its symbolic significance, invites reflection and seeks a balance between transgression and dialogue with the environment. The installation becomes an empty stage set in which brick walls, arches, walls with openings, and pillars emerge from the ridges like plants.
It has been wonderful and satisfying to be able to work with decontextualized architectural elements as a tool for reflection and conversation.
If you would like to visit, the exact location is Barraca street in Bonrepòs i Mirambell. The festival organizes bicycle tours that visit both our installation and the rest of the performances, which you can sign up for here.
